On the left side of the Cathedral is Basilica Santa Restituta commissioned by Empero Constantine and built on top of a pagan temple dedicated to Apollo. It holds the oldest surviving baptistery in the western world discovered in 1970. On the right of the Cathedral is Reale cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro, the most beautiful baroque space I have encountered. Its silver sculptures are oozing passion. The capella houses a vial of the blood of Saint Januarius which is brought out twice a year, on the first Saturday in May and on 19 September, when the dried blood usually liquefies.
